Tyre wear

Having the correct tyre pressure will reduce tyre wear and prolong the life of your tyres, so it pays to check them regularly.

 • An over inflated tyre will cause the centre of the tread area to wear significantly faster than the outside

 • An under inflated tyre will cause the opposite, where the outside of the tyre wears faster than the centre

The recommended pressure for your tyres, in PSI (Pounds per Square Inch), can usually be found in the vehicle's hand book.

Tyres have wear indicators in the tread and when the tread wears down to the indicators then the tyre is on the minimum legal limit and must be changed.

Tyre safety

Tyres are your only contact with the road and provide grip, particularly in bad weather, and should be replaced when worn.  The inside edges of the tyres should also be checked as wrongly inflated/deflated tyres do not wear evenly across the whole surface.

Problems to look out for are:

• bumps and bulges

• cuts

• ply/cords showing

• uneven wear

• tread depth

• loss of pressure

It is a legal requirement that your tyre tread depth is no less than 1.6 mm across the 75% of the width of the  tyre and around the whole circumference.

If your tyres do not meet this legal requirement you risk being fined £60 per tyre and 3 penalty points on your licence.  The maximum fine the court can issue you with is £2,500.

If you would like your tyres checked call in and we will do this completely free of charge.
